The St. Thomas men’s golf team finished fourth overall in the MIAC Championships last weekend at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Arden Hills, Minn.

St. Thomas golfers Alex Kapraun and Bennett Schroeder finished in the top 10, finishing sixth and seventh respectively.

St. Thomas’ five golfers combined for a three-day score of 921, finishing behind Bethel, Gustavus Adolphus and St. John’s.

Coach Scott Proshek said that while St. Thomas came into the tournament feeling good about its chances, the team did not have its best outing.

“Although we were leading after the first round, it still wasn’t our best effort. With that said, we still felt good about our chances, but we made too many mistakes that cost us too many strokes,” Proshek said.

While Proshek said the team did some good things, they couldn’t do enough to end up where they wanted.

“Although we led the field in birdies, we just couldn’t find a way to eliminate the big scores, and thus even pars were hard to come by. We need to continue to work on our short game around the greens,” Proshek said.

Kapraun had St. Thomas’ lowest score, shooting 226 over three rounds.

“I was disappointed with how myself and the team played. Coming into the tournament we were feeling good … but it just didn’t pan out the way we wanted,” Kapraun said.

Kapraun and Schroeder were both selected for the 2014 MIAC Men’s Golf All-Championship Team. However, Kapraun said he still wasn’t satisfied with his performance.

“I was extremely disappointed finishing 6th. I started the tournament fairly strong but finished very poorly compared to how I have played the rest of this season,” Kapraun said.

The Tommies will try to rebound this weekend in the Golfweek’s Tournament in San Destin, Florida.

“Playing in the Golfweek’s Tournament will tell us a lot about our chances at an NCAA berth next spring. We are playing against many of the top-rated teams in the nation. We need to play well,” Proshek said.
