Tommie spotlight: Jenna Dockter

Guard Jenna Dockter has led the St. Thomas women’s basketball team to a stellar 22-0 record with three regular season games left.

And her average 12.8 points per game are a little bit sweeter after sitting out all but eight matchups of the 2013-2014 season with a torn ACL.

“When you’re sitting it out on the sidelines, you learn a lot, but from a different perspective,” Dockter said. “But it also this year makes me so thankful and grateful for my time out on the floor.”

Coach Ruth Sinn said that Dockter, one of eight seniors, came back “hungrier than ever.”

“The thing that separates this team is that hunger – that they understand every day is a gift and that we have to just maximize every day. And Jenna epitomizes that,” Sinn said.

The team gets a lot of confidence from Dockter’s presence on the court, according to Sinn.

“But what makes her so special is Jenna doesn’t care about individual recognition. It’s all about team recognition,” Sinn said. “Her goal this year is to lead the team in assists. Sometimes I have to tell her that she has to remember to be a scorer.”

Guard Hannah Hughes, who played against Dockter in high school, said the team can always count on Dockter to make a big play.

“She’s averaging double figures, she gets the assist, she gets the defensive stop, she just kind of does a little bit of everything – gets the ball to everyone,” Hughes said. “So it’s really nice to have her on the court.”

Dockter said as the regular season comes to a close, the team has its eyes on a MIAC championship. But she wants to leave behind more than just a title.

“With this program I think … (the senior class) would just like to be remembered as people that were passionate about what we’re doing and that we grew as people and players,” Dockter said. “So I just think we want to leave a hardworking mark on this program.”
