Tommies take home prestigious honors

Tight end Charlie Dowdle, running back Jordan Roberts and offensive tackle Dave Simmet were honored as d3football.com First Team All-Americans, and Roberts was named the d3football offensive player of the year Friday night.

Roberts became the first St. Thomas player to be recognized as the d3football offensive player of the year and the first Tommie running back on the first team since Ben Wartman in 2009. St. Thomas’ three players on the first team were the most in Caruso’s tenure.

Defensive tackle Ryan Winter was named to the All-American Third Team. Honorable mentions include offensive tackle Will Hilbert and outside linebacker Jesse Addo.

The MIAC conference enjoyed a steady stream of recognition as well.

Gustavus wide receiver Matt Boyce was honored on the second team. St. John’s running back Sam Sura and wide receiver Josh Bungum, were named to the third and honorable mention teams, respectively. Augsburg wide receiver Joey Sonnenfeld was also picked for the honorable mention squad.

On the defensive side, defensive tackle Peyton Thiry and linebacker Carter Hanson joined their St. John’s teammates on the honorable mention team.

St. Thomas’ opponent in the national championship game enjoyed its fair share of honors.

Mount Union had eight total players named to all four squads, and Mount Union coach Vince Kehres was named the coach of the year by d3football.com. Defensive tackle Tom Lally won the Defensive Player of the Year award and took home first team honors. Linebacker Hank Spencer, cornerback Tre Jones, running back Logan Nemeth and center Mitch Doraty were named to the Second Team. Wide receiver Roman Namdar was honored to the third team, and quarterback Taurice Scott and left guard Michael Frank were honorable mentions.

St. Thomas fell to Mount Union 49-35 in the Stagg Bowl Friday night in Salem, Virginia.
