Cyclist killed while riding on shoulder of Minnesota highway

SARTELL, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say a Sartell bicyclist was “doing nothing wrong” when he was struck from behind by a car and killed while riding on the shoulder of a highway.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says the collision happened about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday on a county road west of Sartell.

The bicyclist is identified as 51-year-old John Seiler.

Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Bruce Bechtold said Seiler was an avid cyclist and “was doing nothing wrong and got clipped.”

Bechtold says Seiler was wearing a helmet and was riding on a “very wide” shoulder when he was struck by a car driven by a 73-year-old woman from Pasadena, California.

Authorities are trying to determine why the car left its lane. There is no suspicion the driver had been drinking.
