Students welcome rising temps as spring nears

With spring less than two weeks away and temperatures steadily rising, students across campus are enjoying the warmer weather in St. Paul.

The National Weather Service recorded a high of 53 degrees on Monday in St. Paul. For many students, the warmer weather is welcome.

“I am looking forward to probably being able to go on walks, like down by the river, and not worry about falling on ice and tripping all the time,” junior Kelsey Burns said.

Sophomore Kelsey Pearson said she is excited for warm weather, rain and no snow.

“I am totally sick of the snow,” Pearson said.

Freshman Zach Lang, a Florida native, said he will miss the Midwestern winter but is also excited to experience the beginning of spring.

“I’ve enjoyed the snow … it’s been a new experience for me, but it’s kind of nice seeing it melt,” Lang said. “I’m looking forward to the leaves growing back on the trees; turning colors. That’s what I’ve heard happens in spring, you know, like flowers coming back up. I’ve actually never seen spring before.”

Burns said she will also miss winter because of her interest in hockey.

“It’s fun to watch hockey and go to the hockey games. Without winter, it’s not really prevalent,” Burns said.

Senior Ryan Carriere said he avoided this winter’s extreme cold by spending time indoors.

“(I will miss) being able to like just chill inside and watch a movie and know that that’s OK; I don’t have to go outside and know that it’s not really great weather out,” Carriere said.

According to the National Weather Service, the average March temperature in the the Twin Cities is 41, while the average low is 24.

The NWS predicts temperatures will hover around the mid-40s through Friday, but daytime temperatures will dip below freezing over the weekend.
