University continues business dean search, forms strategic planning committee

The St. Thomas administration continues to seek candidates to fill the business dean position and launched a steering committee aimed at implementing initiatives that will contribute to overall strategic goals.

Executive Vice President Susan Huber said the search for the next dean of the Opus College of Business is on schedule.

“The (Opus College of Business) search committee has targeted a number of candidates who they are interested in bringing in for an airport interview. The airport interview finalists will be selected in the first week in January and the interviews scheduled for the last week in January,” Huber wrote in an email.

Huber said her goal is to have the new business dean selected by March.

President Julie Sullivan sent out an email to the St. Thomas community on Friday regarding the members of the steering committee for the university’s strategic plan, a long-term vision for the university. According to Alexander, the 16-member committee will work closely with the president and her cabinet to identify major areas the university can improve on.

Corrine Carvalho, theology professor, and Michael Cogan, associate vice president for institutional effectiveness, will co-chair the committee. Junior Mariann Kukielka is the only undergraduate student to serve on the committee, while Jose Andrade-Vera is the sole graduate student.

Sullivan said she hopes the committee will have a list of goals for the Board of Trustees to approve by October 2014. According to Sullivan’s email, the university implemented three strategic plans throughout the Rev. Dennis Dease’s presidency. The last plan was approved by the board in May 2012.

“I expect the committee will have its first meeting this month and will continue its work and engagement of the broader community after the holidays and throughout 2014,” Sullivan wrote.

Sullivan also said the community is invited to the fourth brown bag luncheon of the semester Monday in the Anderson Student Center to make suggestions for the strategic planning process.

Dear members of the St. Thomas community,

One of my priorities since becoming president of St. Thomas has been to launch a strategic planning process that engages the community in envisioning and creating the future of our outstanding university, and I am excited to let you know today that we are under way!

I am delighted that a 16-person steering committee has committed to oversee our strategic planning. I expect the committee will have its first meeting this month and will continue its work and engagement of the broader community after the holidays and throughout 2014.

Strategic planning is critical to the life of any university. St. Thomas went through three rounds of strategic planning during the presidency of Father Dennis Dease, including a final effort that led to the establishment of priorities for the successful Opening Doors capital campaign.

Dr. Corrine Carvalho, a professor of theology and director of the Luann Dummer Center for Women, and Dr. Michael Cogan, associate vice president for institutional effectiveness, have agreed to chair the steering committee. Other committee members are listed below.

An updated St. Thomas vision statement, in conjunction with our existing mission and convictions statements, will provide the foundation for strategic planning. We are in the final stages of reviewing alternatives for a vision statement, and I hope you can attend the brown bag discussion at noon Monday, Dec. 9, in the O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium (with live stream to 201-202 Opus Hall on the Minneapolis campus).

The steering committee will review numerous documents and sources of material, including previous strategic plans, the Higher Learning Commission self-study, the 2012-13 climate survey, last spring’s planning survey, and notes from brown bag and Faculty Senate discussions.

The committee also will establish subcommittees to address specific focus areas, such as academic excellence and Catholic identity, and will set goals, objectives and measurable outcomes. Subcommittee members will include faculty, staff, students and alumni.

I know the spring semester and summer will be a busy time for the steering committee and the subcommittees. Our goal is to take our new strategic plan to the Board of Trustees for approval in October 2014.

  1. Isn’t Opus College slightly underrepresented? Correct me if I am wrong, but about half our students are business students. Thus, it would seem like business professors and students should be represented in greater numbers.
