Football holds on, advances to quarterfinals

Four Tommies fumbled a total of five times and lost two Saturday at O’Shaughnessy Stadium as St. Thomas held on to win 29-13 against Berry College.

Running back Tucker Trettel and quarterback Jacques Perra each lost one fumbles in the contest. Perra also tossed a pick in the third quarter to bring the Tommies’ turnover total to three.

The three turnovers were emblematic of St. Thomas’ offensive effort on the day. After scoring on three consecutive drives in the first and second quarters, the Tommies were held scoreless on eight straight drives going into the fourth quarter. They finally snapped the streak with a 6-yard touchdown run by running back Stephen Wagner with just over 6 ½ minutes in the fourth.

As they have been all season, the Tommie defense was stout against the run, limiting the Vikings to 14 yards on 15 carries. The secondary gave up 266 yards through the air, most coming off the arm of Tate Adcock, the Vikings’ backup quarterback. Adcock threw two interceptions, one of which came in the final minutes of the game to seal the win for the Tommies.

St. Thomas (11-1 overall, 8-0 MIAC) will take on Mary Hardin-Baylor Dec. 2 in Belton, Texas. Mary Hardin-Baylor beat Linfield 24-0 to advance to the quarterfinal round.
