After initial concern, USG funds Allies conference

The Undergraduate Student Government approved a conference and competition funding request Sunday for Allies to attend the Midwest Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, and Ally College Conference.

The motion to approve the request was tabled last Sunday after a USG general council member voiced concern about whether the content of the conference was in agreement with the university’s mission statement.

The conference was held Feb. 19-21 at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and aimed to “promote leadership, activism, networking, diversity, health, and empowerment among gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and allied students, staff, and faculty throughout the United States and Canada.”

USG also approved conference and competition requests for Men’s Volleyball Club and Students Today, Leaders Forever.

Men’s Volleyball Club received $270 to compete in a tournament at Mankato State University.

STLF received $1,800 to attend a conference in Washington, D.C., over spring break.

The Geography and French clubs both received unanimous USG approval and are now official St. Thomas clubs.
