St. Thomas’ statue of Archbishop John Ireland was placed on a pedestal, Thursday, in the lower quad.

The statue has been in storage since June 2009, when it was moved to make way for the remodeling of Schoenecker Arena.

Freshman Mike Phelan was happy to see the addition.

“I saw the stand since I came here, and I figured a statue would be going there,” Phelan said. “It’s pretty cool. It looks a lot better than the hole that was there.”

Ireland was the first archbishop of St. Paul-Minneapolis, and he founded St. Thomas in 1885.
