NDSU students design winter travel app

VIRGINIA, Minn. (AP) — Computer engineering students from North Dakota State University have helped design a smartphone application for winter travelers.

The free app designed by 20-year-old Adam Koski of Virginia, Minn., and Nathan Joraanstad of Rolla, N.D., helps motorists who are stranded in severe winter weather. It determines geographical location, calculates how long the vehicle’s engine will run on remaining fuel and provides emergency contact numbers, among other things.

The app, called Winter Survival Kit, also provides information on putting together a physical winter survival kit and winterizing a vehicle.

Koski and Joraanstad designed the app in collaboration with the university’s extension service.
