Tommie-Johnnie plans introduced at USG meeting

The Undergraduate Student Government discussed a few preliminary plans for the Tommie-Johnnie game at its meeting Sunday night.

Chris Daniels, vice president of administrative affairs, said signs will be posted to remind students about good sportsmanship.

“(The signs are) going to just basically say, ‘Please keep in mind to always promote positive sportsmanship and school spirit while attending sporting events.’”

USG President Greg Scharine said the council has already touched base with St. John’s University student representatives.

“In the last probably three or four years the USG president, the St. Thomas student body president and the St. John’s student body president have been in talks almost every year to how they can promote better sportsmanship at games,” Scharine said. “So this year we’ve talked with the St. John’s people a couple times, and they’re doing a big ad campaign on their campus to promote good sportsmanship as well as now unofficial T-shirts at the game.”

Scharine said USG plans to handout T-shirts that read “RUN USG” sometime next week.

”They’re pretty cool. The last couple years we’ve had, I wouldn’t say dorky, but not as popular shirts,” he said. “This year we wanted to make sure that they were quite popular.”

Scharine also confirmed that inappropriate shirts will not be tolerated at the Tommie-Johnnie game.

“There’s going to be a team from the dean’s office as well as some St. John’s people that will make sure that if they see a shirt you have to take it off once inside (the game),” he said.

USG also discussed its plans to make a motorized float for the homecoming parade, which were not allowed last year because of construction restrictions. The council will also hold its first Party in the Library this Tuesday, passing out cookies in the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library lobby at 11:00 p.m.
