Upcoming elections discussed, three clubs funded in Feb. 7 USG meeting

Upcoming special elections were discussed, three clubs were funded, and one guest presented at the Feb. 7 Undergraduate Student Government general council meeting.

St. Thomas students will have the opportunity to vote for nine vacant general council positions beginning Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 8:15 a.m. through Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. Ballots will be sent via email.

Open positions include first-year class senator, first-year residential senator, sophomore class president, junior class president, two junior class senator positions, senior class senator, greater Minnesota/out of state senator and legislative affairs senator. Candidates will be informed of results by 8 p.m. Wednesday via phone call.

Amy McDonough, chief of staff and liaison to the office of the president, spoke to the general council about the Day at the Capitol event on March 12, with hope students will attend to lobby their representatives for student aid. In her past experience with the Minnesota Private College Council, the St. Thomas grad lobbied for private college students at the Capitol, working to get them aid so they could attend the college of their choice.

USG will use a new finance system on TommieLink for internal club funding requests.

For internal funding requests, USG finance committee approved $1,621 for HOLA and $500 for Business Professionals of America. In conference and competition funding requests, USG approved $1,750 for BPA’s State Leadership Conference.
