Football players receive on and off the field awards

D3Football.com selected St. Thomas’ offensive line for Division III Team of the Week after an exceptional performance Sept. 19 against St. Olaf. The offensive line helped push the Tommie run game to 201 yards on the ground, including two touchdowns for junior running back Ben Wartman.

Senior cornerback Jeffrey Hilliard was one of 22 players named this week to the 2009 AllState Good Works Team. According to Tommiesports.com, the award is given to 22 players annually to recognize outstanding campus and community service. St. Thomas is tied with Georgia for the most honorees of all time with 12, which is the same number of years that Division III schools have been eligible for the award.

Hilliard’s older brother Andrew was honored in 2002 and the two became the fifth set of brothers to both receive the award. The Hilliards are in good company because one of the other sets of brothers to be on the Good Works Team are Eli and Peyton Manning.
