Golf teams in action over the weekend

The women’s golf team took fifth of 20 teams at the Division III Classic this weekend, while the men’s team finished 11th out of 20 teams at the St. John’s University Invite.

The Tommie women battled through the absence of injured senior All-American Laura Heck to post a team score of 659. St. Thomas finished 31 strokes behind tournament champions Gustavus. The Tommies had only four players, so the score of every golfer for both rounds were counted. Senior Amy Anderson led the Tommies with a 156, which was good enough to tie for fifth in the entire field.

The Tommie men got an outstanding effort from John Young, who tied for third with a two-round total of 149 after a 73 on Sunday. Junior Grant Shafranski took 23rd with a 156 as the Tommies took sixth out of 10 competing MIAC teams.

The women compete next weekend at the Southwest Minnesota State Mustang Invite, while the men will send squads to both the St. Olaf Fall Invite and the Wis.-Eau Claire Invite.
