The St. Thomas men’s golf team took third in the MIAC championship Monday with a score of 914, and the women’s golf team placed fifth with a score of 1049.

Men’s golf coach Scott Proshek said he was ready for a battle this weekend. Even with one player injured and unable to compete, Proshek thought the team had the potential to do well.

He said the conference was more balanced than ever before.

“It’s gonna be a dog fight,” Proshek said.

Senior Sean Barret shot 79 Monday. He placed eighth individually with a score of 226 in the 54-hole tournament and made the 2010 All-MIAC roster.

The men will play next week in the Twin Cities Classic.

For the women’s team, sophomore Cassy Norton placed eighth with a 252, and freshman Emma Wilson finished tied for 10th with a 256.

Sara Evens, women’s team coach, said the team this year is young, but the Tommies were well-prepared going into the tournament.

“We just need to have everyone play to their potential in the same tournament,” Evens said.  “If we do that, a top-four placing is our goal.” Evens also said this is a rebuilding year for the team, but the team has handled the transition well.

This was the last tournament on the Tommie women’s fall schedule. The team will continue to play this spring.
