Softball team loses first two games in Florida tournament

The St. Thomas softball team lost both games Friday in the first day of Leadoff Classic tournament in Panama City, Fla.

In the first game the Tommies lost to Central College 3-2 on a walk-off single by sophomore Holly Von Fumetti.

The Dutch loaded the bases after two intentional walks, but with two outs Von Fumetti laid down a bunt single for the win.

Senior Marta Radcliffe pitched a complete game giving up three hits, three runs and notching four strikeouts. Offensively St. Thomas was only able to get five hits, each from a different player.

In the second game, the Tommies gave up four runs in the seventh inning to Christopher Newport College, losing 7-3.

The Tommies were led by freshman Alyssa Dunrud, who went two-for-four with an RBI, and Erica Wilson who also went two-for-four from the plate. Sophomore Angela Phillips started for the Tommies, giving up seven hits and four runs with two strikeouts.

The Tommies will play Saturday at 1 p.m. against Denison University.
