The water polo club is in full swing this fall in the group’s first full year as a funded club. Members practice weekly in the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex pool, preparing for future scrimmages with schools such as St. John’s.

“There are lots of schools in Minnesota with teams,” said junior Liz Heisler, who co-founded the club.

Heisler had the idea to start the group after she couldn’t make it to varsity swim practices her freshman year due to class conflicts. She said she wanted to come up with something at St. Thomas that would keep her in the pool and still be competitive and fun.

Heisler said the club has received a fair amount of interest. Thirty-five students are on the e-mail list and she said “seven to 10 people show up for practices.”

The club practices three times a week with both in-pool and dry-land training. Heisler said the goal of practices is to build up members’ endurance for scrimmages against teams such as the Johnnies.

“They’re really good,” junior Alys Morrison said. “We’ll get there eventually.”
