Women’s basketball falls in home opener to UW-Stevens Point

The St. Thomas women’s basketball team lost 72-67 to the No. 6 UW-Stevens Point Pointers Monday night.

Both teams were in the NCAA playoffs last season.

The non-conference game was the first basketball game in Schoenecker Arena in the new Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex.

Assistant coach Katie Alsdurf said she thought it was a great game despite the loss. Alsdurf said playing such a tough team provided a wonderful opportunity to see where the team is at and what they can begin to work on.

“The good thing is that was one game, and it’s only one game, and I thought we played fairly well for the first 36 minutes,” Alsdurf said. “We missed a couple of free throws that really cost us the game, but overall I thought we had a good turnout, a nice showing.”

The women will travel to Los Angeles this weekend to play Occidental College and California Lutheran University. The MIAC season begins Dec. 1 against Macalester.
