The women’s basketball team went on the road to defeat Macalester 60-52 in the first round of the MIAC playoffs.

Junior Rachel Booth led the Tommies with a game-high 20 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks. Senior Ann Baltzer had 18 points for Macalester in the Scots’ first playoff game in program history.

St. Thomas led by as many as 13 points and survived several scoring runs by the Scots as Macalester cut the lead to as few as six points late in the second half. Macalester did jump out to a 7-0 lead to start the game, but poor shooting plagued the Scots for the rest of the game. Macalester finished shooting just 25 percent from the field.

Sophomore Jordyn Sears and junior Becky Theisen both had eight points for St. Thomas, and sophomore Sarah Smith chipped in seven points.

St. Thomas will play 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Gustavus in the semi-finals. The winner will advance to the finals Saturday to play either St. Catherine’s or St. Ben’s.
