Women’s hockey gets back-to-back shutouts against Augsburg

The women’s hockey team opened up its MIAC season Friday and Saturday with back-to-back 4-0 wins over Augsburg.

“It was very important for us to get these first two wins in the conference early,” freshman Andrea Bishop said. “It got the team off to a good start to the season.”

Freshman Alise Riedel and junior Nicole Muske each had shutouts in net for the Tommies in games one and two respectively. Riedel had 17 saves and Muske had 16 as St. Thomas killed all eight Augsburg power plays between the two games.

“The penalty killers and the goalies all did a great job,” Bishop said. “The team does a good job of protecting the defensive zone as [its] first priority.”

Junior Taylor Schluter led St. Thomas with a goal in each game, combining with six other Tommies for the team’s eight goals. Among those six were freshmen Lauren Mumm and Bishop, who each posted their first collegiate goals in Saturday’s game.

“It felt great to be able to contribute to the offense of the team,” Bishop said.

St. Thomas plays St. Ben’s Nov. 19 at home.
