Students compete in ‘Running of the Nerds’

The second “Running of the Nerds” took place Saturday in the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex fieldhouse, in which about 40 computer science “nerds” competed in athletic events.

The event was held for the first time last spring, but participants only ran the 100-meter dash. This semester, they ran the mile, showed off their muscles in a plank and push-up competition, partnered up in a wheelbarrow race and hustled through an obstacle course.

Both students and faculty members joined in on the night’s events, and senior Amanda Maricle-Roberts, coordinator of the “Running of the Nerds,” said she was looking forward to it.

“Our professor is running the mile with us, and I’m excited for that,” Maricle-Roberts said.

The final event combined brain and brawn in the math relay. Before the four teams sprinted 100 meters, each of the team members solved an algebra problem.

“I’m definitely going to have to practice my math a little bit. That was a little bit of a struggle,” sophomore Zach Lang said.

Junior Antonio Erskin said he will be back next year to defend his 100-meter dash crown.

“This was easily the funniest thing I’ve done so far this year,” Erskin said.
