USG extends 2013-2013 council application deadline

Undergraduate Student Government President Mike Orth announced the deadline to apply for USG’s 2013-2014 council was extended to 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Two sophomore class senators, sustainability chair, student diversity and relations chair, one junior class senator, elections credentials chair and both neighborhood senator positions still need to be filled. Orth said that this has been the first time he can recall that the deadline for applications have been extended.

“We tried to do our best this time to get the word out about the extension, because we did have about six or seven positions that were left … open,” Orth said. “We have a lot of applications coming in, just within the last few days after we announced that the positions were still open.”  USGUpdate1-150x150

Sophomore Louis Sand said that a USG committee has recommended improvements to the council’s constitution and moved to approve the amended document next week. Sand said club financing was an initial push to rework the constitution’s format, but several inconsistencies inspired a more “streamlined” approach.

“What we needed was a document that was easier to change, that we could change more quickly, especially for some of the number things, so the constitution could be sort of streamlined,” Sand said.

A committee has overseen the revising process throughout the semester. The new constitution will include a by-law section with more specific rules, but that portion will be delegated to a committee next semester.

The council approved budget and conference and competition requests for 10 clubs: Entrepreneurial society, Electrical engineering, Literary Club, Liturgical Choir, Summit Singers, HUSA, Women’s Rugby, QDK, Allies and Theology Club.

Enactus, BEAST and Health and Human Performance were also allotted conference and competition funds.
