Students steer clear of tailgating

Tailgating is back at St. Thomas for the first time in several years.

Parents and alumni gathered Saturday to tailgate, but no St. Thomas students showed up.

Jane Canney, vice president of student affairs, said the university brought back tailgating to help enhance the St. Thomas community.

The university prohibits alcoholic beverages and loud music at tailgating events, among other restrictions.

As a student, I knew right away that nobody should show up to tailgate. It’s because the administration is putting all of these rules and regulations on how to tailgate. Since you can’t have glass bottles, music, charcoal grills, and/or alcohol, you basically have a parking lot to sit in. I’d take my living room over a parking lot behind OSS any day. Think about it like this: what if the administration gave you an Xbox without any games, controllers, a tv, and electricity. Then they said, “Look at this amazing privilege we gave you! Have fun!” It’s nice that they are trying to enhance student activities, but this one comes up short.

I agree with David. Although alcohol and charcoal are not the only things needed for a tailgating party… they are part of the tailgating culture. The way the University has this set up makes it an opportunity to have a quiet picnic in an asphalt parking lot. It might be a “family fun environment” but it definitely is not an environment that has any appeal to a very broad group of College students. It sure is nice that the University is “allowing” us to sit in our parking lots…. gee thanks for the permission St. Thomas!
