Seniors Erin Sprangers and Kirsten Moran both scored a goal and led the women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win against St. Ben’s at home Wednesday. The victory ran St. Thomas’ win streak to six games and its conference unbeaten streak to 17.
Strong defensive play by the Tommies led to its fifth shutout of the year. But it still took a while for St. Thomas to get things going Wednesday afternoon.
St. Thomas women’s soccer will play the College of St. Benedict at home 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Tommies are currently 4-0 in the MIAC and 7-2 overall, while St. Ben’s sits at 2-1 in the MIAC and 4-3-1 overall.
St. Thomas beat St. Ben’s 3-0 the last time the two played in 2008.
Portal, a Web application that combines elements of Blackboard, Murphy Online and Outlook e-mail, is growing in popularity. Since its launch last spring, the number of daily visits has nearly doubled.
When Portal was initiated last semester, it averaged 1,800 visits per day, said Elizabeth Houle, Web and media services director for Information, Resources and Technologies. This fall, Portal has received an average of 3,500 visits a day and 14,000 page views per day. But IRT is unable to discern what portion of the students using Portal are undergraduates or graduates, Houle said.

When the St. Thomas women’s soccer team opened its conference season last year, the women were underdogs to win the conference title. This season, St. Thomas opened its title defense with a 3-0 win against St. Catherine University at home Wednesday afternoon.
“We came out with intensity,” coach Sheila McGill said. “We played as a team.”
The Zero Adult Providers project is undergoing a change.
“The ZAP project is currently in a state of confusion,” said James Sachs, assistant dean of students.
ZAP was designed to help prevent underage drinking, according to the Minnesota Institute of Public Health.
“Preventing underage drinking is not just about getting kids to say no to alcohol. It’s also about getting adults to stop providing alcohol to kids,” according to the Institute of Public Health’s Web site.
