Empty summer in the city for kids hit by cutbacks
A rising number of children can look forward to excruciatingly boring school breaks this year as budget crises in many cities rob them of activities and programs that have defined summer in the city. Swimming pools are being closed. Recreation centers are locking their doors. Library summer reading programs are suffering. It’s a headache for parents but an economic reality for cities.

Junior pitcher Bryce Gapinski’s strong performance helped keep the St. Thomas baseball team alive in the NCAA tournament Thursday as the Tommies ended Aurora’s season with an 8-3 victory in Whitewater, Wis.

The Tommies outhit the Warhawks 8-4, but Whitewater squeaked by with a victory by capitalizing on Tommie errors early in the game. St. Thomas will play Aurora University at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Freshman Zach Franz gave up one run and four hits in six innings pitched, leading St. Thomas to a 5-1 victory over Hamline Sunday morning. But the Pipers won the second game, coming from behind three times to win the MIAC playoff championship 7-5. St.Thomas still has a chance at an at-large bid.

Despite having just two individual champions all weekend, the Tommies rallied from a third-place standing Friday to edge out Gustavus by 11 points and bring home the program’s seventh straight outdoor conference championship.
Softball ends season against tough Luther pitching
Riding the arm of senior pitcher Lexy Determan, Luther College (41-4) defeated St. Thomas (42-6) 4-3 Sunday in Eau Claire, Wis., ending the Tommies’ season and capturing its second consecutive NCAA Division III regional championship.
Softball loses to Luther College 11-2; snaps 31-game win streak
The loss drops the Tommies into the loser’s bracket and halts a 31-game winning streak. The team will now have to win its next three elimination games in a row to win the regional.
Baseball defeats Macalester 11-7 to stay alive in MIAC playoffs
St. Thomas trailed 7-5 in the sixth inning of the second game when freshman Tim Kuzniar and senior Tim Kahle led a Tommie rally to score three runs and take the lead. St. Thomas added three more runs in the ninth inning for a total of 11.

For the second day in a row, a freshman was the story for the Tommie softball team (41-4) as the team crushed Ripon College (25-9) 19-3 Friday in the double-elimination NCAA Division III softball regional in Eau Claire, Wis.
Edwards throws complete game in 1-0 win over Johnnies in MIAC playoffs
Senior Kris Edwards allowed four hits and struck out seven Johnnies, including Connor Cline and Eric Smith, the Johnnies’ fourth and fifth hitters, to end the game. Five of his seven strike outs came in the final two innings.
