Free bus and light-rail rides tonight offer St. Patrick’s Day celebrators a designated driver thanks to Metro Transit.

Metro Transit will offer the free bus and light-rail rides Wednesday, March 17 after 6 p.m. No ID is needed to ride.

Free rides are available until the last scheduled route, which varies depending on the bus schedule. But a Metro Transit Information Center representative said downtown routes and routes along bars will be open until late.

The last light rail leaves downtown at 1:15 a.m. The service is offered on routes operated by Metro Transit, the Met Council, Minnesota Valley Transit Authority and Plymouth Metrolink.

The rides are offered through a community program called Miller Lite Free Rides. According to Miller Lite Free Rides’ Web site this program is in its 13th year. Metro Transit partnered with the program to provide a worry-free and safe alternative to driving. The program promotes responsible drinking by not requiring fares on St. Patrick’s Day.
