One student was injured after an incident in Flynn Hall Friday when another St. Thomas student accidentally fired a gun through a dorm wall, according to a series of tweets from the University of St. Thomas.

St. Thomas Public Safety issued an all clear after alerting students and faculty of an accidental gun shot in Flynn Hall that injured another student.

The original alert advised students and faculty to stay away from the area. Later, St. Paul Police Department authorized the all clear and reported there was no further threat.

Vice President for Student Affairs Karen Lange refused to talk with TommieMedia but did issue a statement to the university along with Public Safety Director Dan Meuwissen on Saturday afternoon.

“The sanctity of our campus was shaken on Friday night,” the statement read. “St. Thomas is a weapons-free campus and the safety of our students, staff and faculty is a top priority for all on campus.”

The statement said that the student who was shot was in a separate room from the student with the firearm when the weapon accidentally discharged.

The injured student was transported to the hospital and received surgery. The student is currently recovering and stable, though the injury was more severe than originally realized.

Nobody involved has been identified, but the statement did say that all parties involved are St. Thomas students.

Sophomore and Flynn Hall resident Taylor Ponath said he didn’t hear the gun shot, and the alert was how he found out about it.

“I thought (the gun shot) would have been on the other side of the building because I didn’t hear anything,” Ponath said. “But then I walked out to meet some friends and there were about 10 cops sitting out in the hallway.”

St.Thomas officials emphasized that this was not an act of violence and is being investigated by St. Paul police as an accidental discharge of a firearm. The weapon that discharged is in police custody, and the individual who discharged to weapon is not on campus, according to the statement.

“Possessing a firearm on university property is a violation of the student code of conduct. The university takes this violation very seriously and is conducting an immediate and thorough investigation,” the statement read.
