#USTGirlProblems: Latest trending topic

St. Thomas girls are taking to Twitter to discuss their latest “girl problems.” The new trending topic and Twitter account, @USTGirlProblems, started on Oct. 24, and has already been creating a buzz around campus.    ops logo

The account has only tweeted 30 times but already has more than 300 followers. Naturally being a St. Thomas female, I was immediately drawn to the account.

The tweets are stereotypical, but I find them hilarious. Here are a few of my favorite tweets:

USTGirlProblems: Yoga pants and UGG season. #USTGirlProblems

Anyone who tries to say they don’t enjoy wearing yoga pants and UGG boots has never worn them before. They are extremely comfortable for class. Yes, they are a bit expensive, but the knock-offs are almost just as good.

USTGirlProblems: Really, Public Safety? Another parking ticket? Sorry my new boots aren’t broken in yet, obvi I couldn’t WALK to campus today #USTGirlProblems

The new boots situation doesn’t relate to me because I can’t afford new boots, but I also can’t afford any more parking tickets. Instead of constantly charging us, maybe Public Safety could tell us where we can park.

USTGirlProblems: Now why haven’t I gotten kissed under the arches yet? #USTGirlProblems

Sometimes I think the idea of becoming a “real Tommie” is pretty cheesy. But I think most St. Thomas girls would not mind getting a smooch from a fellow Tommie underneath the arches.

USTGirlProblems: Hey will you delete that picture off Facebook? I look disgusting. #USTGirlProblems

Girls, don’t put unflattering pictures of your friends on Facebook. It doesn’t matter how good you look in the picture, if it makes me look gross, leave it off.

USTGirlProblems: No bathroom on the first floor of the library? Great, now I have to walk all the way up to second to touch up my lipstick #USTGirlProblems

I have always wondered why the first floor of the library doesn’t have a bathroom. It seems like every time I’m there I have to go to the bathroom. It’s just my luck.

I realize that these tweets set a strong stereotype for St. Thomas females, and it is not a positive one.

The majority of the messages describe St. Thomas girls as being spoiled, vain, selfish and mindless. It portrays us as girls who like to drink more than study, care more about our looks than anything else and who clearly complain enough about our lives to get our own Twitter account.

The trouble with the account is that students read the tweets, laugh, and feel embarrassed for the girls who actually think like this. But realistically, a lot of these tweets are the thoughts we have but don’t like to admit.

Few St. Thomas students could read these tweets and say they can’t relate with a single one. Honestly, everyone hates getting parking tickets. And what student doesn’t want to get kissed under the arches? I know I do.

  1. Apparently the reason there are no bathrooms on the 1st floor of the library is because the architects who designed it didn’t think having a bathroom there would be “aesthically pleasing.” Ironically, all but one of the architects were male & the female was the youngest of the group so her opinion was not taken seriously… at least, this is what the librarians have told me.

  2. I suppose I should now mention the fact that @USTGirlProblems has been issued a cease and desist by UST.. Is this because the account uses a trademarked UST logo? Or is St. Thomas attempting to limit our free speech on social media? Someone should get to the bottom of this.
