In MIAC: St. Olaf upsets undefeated Bethel

St. Olaf 30, Bethel 28

St. Olaf quarterback Dan Dobson threw two touchdowns and ran for another to help the Oles upset Bethel, who came into the game undefeated. Dobson was 18-30 with 335 yards passing. St. Olaf is now 4-1 in the MIAC, with its only loss coming at the hands of the Tommies.

Bethel held an early 14-0 lead and led 28-10 in the fourth quarter. The comeback gave the Oles their first win over Bethel since 2005. Bethel will look to bounce back against St. John’s next week in Collegeville.

Augsburg 35, Carleton 14

After trailing Carleton 14-0 at halftime, Augsburg scored 35 unanswered points in the second half to make the final score 35-14. Augsburg remains undefeated with a 4-0 record overall.

The Carleton Knights dominated the first half, controlling the ball with its rushing attack. Running backs Jon Lien and John Baker combined for 89 yards on the ground, and the Knights dictated the first half’s tempo. Carleton quarterback Mike Hartwell completed all 14 of his passes for 118 yards with two touchdowns.

Carleton’s defense held the Auggies to only 106 total yards, and the Knights had a 14-0 lead at halftime.

Carleton lost the lead in the second half due to numerous turnovers. Augsburg forced an interception and returned the ball deep into Carleton territory. The Auggies scored their first touchdown on a six-yard dash by Tyler Maxwell. Later in the quarter, the Auggies retrieved a Carleton fumble and tied the score at 14-14 with a successful two-point conversion.

Augsburg gained the lead ending a Knights’ drive with an interception. The Auggies scored two more touchdowns in the half. Augsburg outgained the Knights 411-280 yards.

The Auggies will host St. Thomas next Saturday in Minneapolis. The Knights return to Laird Stadium next weekend, as they host Concordia College-Moorhead in another conference showdown.

Macalester 17, Hamline 0

Macalaster snapped a 12-game losing streak to its Snelling Avenue rival Hamline with a 17-0 victory. Macalester running back T. Joe Loiselle ran the ball 38 times for 173 yards and a touchdown. The win reclaimed the Paint Bucket Trophy for the Scotts, in the 112th meeting between the two squads.

Hamline quarterback Connor Sathre completed seven of 28 passes and threw two picks. The Pipers are still looking for their first win of the season and travel to Gustavus next week.
