In the MIAC: Bethel rallies past Concordia

111015_MIAC_roundup Quarterback Josh Aakre threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others as Bethel scored 21 straight points to turn a 13-6 deficit into a 27-13 victory over Concordia on Saturday in Moorhead.

Aakre completed 7 of 17 passes for 192 yards and ran for 35 yards. Jesse Phenow ran for 161 yards on 24 carries as the Bethel (6-2, 4-2 MIAC) rushed for 255 yards.

Concordia (6-3, 4-3) scored on two of its first three possessions but Bethel held the Cobbers scoreless for the last 44:45. Matt Peterson scored both of the Concordia touchdowns on a 29-yard pass from Michael Dunham and a 58-yard run.

Dunham passed for 235 yards and broke the Concorida record for career yardage. Dunham has 4,959 yard, surpassing the 4,889 yards passing by Ethan Pole (1995-98).

Bethel entertains Hamline next Saturday. Concordia has the week off.

Augsburg 31, Macalester 23

Augsburg quarterback Marcus Brumm threw for 356 yards and three touchdowns, and Adam Carl caught 10 passes for 103 yards and two scores, as the Auggies rallied for a nonconference home victory.

Augsburg (5-3 ) scored the first 10 points of the game. Macalester (3-5) then scored 20 straight points, but Augsburg scored 21 of the next 24 points. Augsburg outgained Macalester 446-333, led by MIAC rushing leader Tyler Maxwell. The freshman ran 25 times for 109 yards and a touchdown, a one-yard run late in the first quarter.

Maxwell has 849 rushing yards on 169 carries and 14 touchdowns (13 rushing, one receiving).

Brumm completed 25 of 36 passes for 356 yards.

For Macalester, T. Joe Loiselle rushed 30 times for 114 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Clark Bledsoe completed 14 of 25 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Augsburg travels to St. Peter to face Gustavus next Saturday, while Macalester plays host to Trinity Bible (N.D.)

St. Olaf 40, Hamline 0

Leon Clark rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns as St. Olaf cruised to the home victory over Hamline (0-7, 0-5) .

Clark rushed for 110 yards in the first quarter, when St. Olaf took a 7-0 lead. Clark’s 28-yard scoring run with 4:31 left in the first quarter gave the Oles (7-1, 5-1) a 7-0 lead. The Oles led 17-0 at the half.

Stephen Asp caught touchdown passes of 15 and 7 yards for St. Olaf.

St. Olaf heads to Collegeville next Saturday to play St. John’s.

St. John’s 47, Carleton 14

St. John’s answered an early 7-0 deficit with 47 consecutive points in a route of Carleton in Collegeville.

Senior wide receiver Brent Graboski caught five passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns, 10 yards shy of the school record set by Rick Bell in 1982. Sophomore Connor Bruns completed 10 of 16 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown.

After St. John’s (4-4, 3-3) went three and out on its first first possession, Andy Zweber capped a 10-play, 67-yard scoring drive with a 25-yard touchdown run to give Carleton (2-6, 1-5) the lead.

But Bruns connected with Graboski for a 52-yard gain on third-and-nine on the next drive, setting up a 29-yard field goal from junior kicker Jimmie Mattson.

The Johnnies took the lead on Stephen Johnson’s 31-yard touchdown run, the Johnnies’ longest rush of the season, then Bruns hit Sam Pederson for gains of five, 24 and 35 yards on the Johnnies’ next drive. Bruns took it over from 7 yards out.

St. John’s out-gained Carleton 495-286, including a 371-79 advantage through the air.

Carleton travels next Saturday to St. Paul to face St. Thomas.
