Volleyball to play Wisconsin-Eau Claire in NCAA opener

The St. Thomas volleyball team, co-champions of the MIAC conference, received an at-large bid to the NCAA playoffs, the NCAA announced Monday. The Tommies will face Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Friday at 3 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn., in the opening round of the 64-team tournament.

MIAC schools St. Ben’s and Bethel also join conference tournament champion Concordia-Moorhead in the playoffs. The Cobbers earned an automatic bid when they beat St. Thomas 3-2 in the tournament championship match.

The Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds (22-12) have not played St. Thomas this season, but are 2-4 against other MIAC opponents.

If the Tommies advance past Wisconsin-Eau Claire they will play the winner of the St. Scholastica-St. Ben’s game on Saturday.
