The University of St. Thomas has received approval to begin reclassification from Division III to Division I, making it the first school in the NCAA’s modern era to make that transition, president Julie Sullivan announced in an email Wednesday.
The NCAA’s Division I Strategic Vision and Planning Committee announced Wednesday a potential five-year method for Division III universities to become Division I members and revealed its willingness to consider a waiver from St. Thomas and the Summit League, which the university said it would pursue.
After Division III St. Thomas’ involuntary removal from the MIAC last spring, the university was invited to join the Division I Summit League conference this fall. Designer Maggie Stout has changes St. Thomas athletes might expect if the university transitions from DIII to DI.
