Junior midfielder Wes Lorrens was selected as the Summit League Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, Nov. 1 after his strong performance in the Tommies’ final game of their inaugural Division I season.

Lorrens scored a game-tying header against Kansas City on Oct. 30 with six and a half minutes remaining in the match followed by an additional header in overtime that gave the Tommies a 2-1 win.

“I think it shows our potential a lot,” Lorrens said. “I mean, us scoring a late goal to tie it up in the 84th (minute), and then win the game in overtime with three seconds left, and now that we started winning at the end of the season, I think it will carry over next season.”

Lorrens said that he began playing soccer when he was 8 years old in his hometown of Rome, Georgia.

“I could run around a lot all the time (playing soccer) because I had a lot of energy,” he said.

Later, IMG Sports Academy recruited Lorrens to play soccer in Florida throughout high school. From there, he went on to play defense at the Virginia Military Institute before transferring to St. Thomas last spring.

Reflecting on the award, Lorrens was excited to be recognized but felt that the most important thing was the Tommies ending the season with a win.

“I was happy. It’s a good award to get and so I’m gonna build a resume, but all that matters is we won the game,” Lorrens said.

Coach Jon Lowery said he was proud of Lorrens for being a “great teammate” who shows up on a daily basis.

“Wes did a tremendous job of being a selfless teammate throughout the season and found himself converted late in the year to a midfielder,” Lowery said in an email.“His ball-winning and instincts in the attack when we needed him were invaluable to our late three-game win streak.”

Lorrens is looking toward the next season, mainly just to play with his teammates once again.

“It’s already been a week and I’m missing them already,” Lorrens said.
