First-year St. Thomas student Joia Simpson died early Thursday morning after falling from a 10th-floor balcony at The Bridges apartments in Dinkytown near the University of Minnesota campus.

The Minneapolis Fire Department arrived at the scene at around 1 a.m. and determined that she did not survive her injuries after the fall. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner determined that Simpson died “of multiple blunt force injuries sustained in a fall.” Minneapolis Police are investigating.

Simpson, 19, was from Bayside, California. According to the St. Thomas Newsroom, Simpson “was interested in studying business. Her family most wants people to remember her beautiful smile.”

A statement received by KMSP-TV from the management of the apartment complex said, “The Bridges said management is aware of the incident and is working closely with police on their investigation.” The Bridges referred to the victim as a guest at the facility.

Counseling and Psychological Services and the  Center for Campus Ministry are available for students, faculty and staff who desire grief support.
