Men’s hockey raises more than $4,000 for ‘Movember’

St. Thomas men’s hockey players are participating in “No Shave November” by growing out their facial hair to “change the face of men’s cancer.”

The team and coaches have been uploading photos of their mustaches to the global charity website “Movember” where friends and family can support the team through donations.

The team had an initial goal of raising $1,000, but after that target was quickly shattered, coach Jeff Boeser set a new goal of $2,000. By Nov. 20, the team had raised $2,900 and by Nov. 25, it had a total of $4,104.

Forward Tyler Gubb said the Tommies weren’t sure what to expect coming into the month-long contest.

“We didn’t know how many people would donate,” Gubb said. “We’ve never done it before, so ($1,000) was a benchmark of what we wanted to hit.”
