Men’s soccer wins 4-3 shootout over Hamline

The St. Thomas men’s soccer team scored in the third minute of overtime Tuesday at Hamline to come away with a 4-3 win.

The Tommies (2-0-1 MIAC,  6-1-1 overall) trailed the Pipers (1-2-0 MIAC, 4-3-0 overall)  by two goals in the first half but came out on top after forward Jonathan Acevedo took control of the ball and scored in the 92nd minute with an assist from forward Lucas Horton.

“We’re so young, we need games like this,” coach Jon Lowery said. “Hopefully we can get to a point where we aren’t in situations like this much longer.”

After falling behind 2-0 on the scoreboard, midfielder Alex Gutenberg scored the first goal for the Tommies in the 20th minute of the first period to cut the deficit to one.

“Alex’s first touch was a goal and suddenly it was a momentum builder,” Lowery said. “It was just a lifeline. We grabbed it and we ran with it.”

Forward Andrew Shirley scored another two goals in the first half, giving the Tommies their first lead of the match at 3-2 in the 42nd minute. Gutenberg and midfielder Andrew Stuempfig each had an assist on the goals.

Piper defender Seif El-Fatairy scored the first goal of the game midway through the first period. Forward Stefan Kinsinger scored the Pipers’ second goal shortly after. After allowing three unanswered points, defender Alex Rouse scored the last goal for the Pipers in the 74th minute of the match.

The fan section’s energy ramped up when the team was tied at 3-3 and even more so once overtime began. Acevedo made sure those fans didn’t have to wait long, drilling the match’s final goal in the third minute of the overtime period.

Lowery said the team is ready to give everything they have in their next game.

“We always have a great game with Macalester,” he said.

The Tommies play Saturday, Sept. 29 at home against Macalester.
