Sophomore running back Dwayne Allen Jr. scored from four yards out in the second overtime to give Dubuque a 32-26 victory over Bethel at Arden Hills.
The teams traded field goals in the first overtime. Dubuque, going first in the second overtime, needed four plays to gain the end zone.
On its turn, Bethel drew a 5-yard penalty for a false start, then running back Riley McCann was thrown for a five-yard loss. Three Bethel passes fell incomplete.
Bethel trailed 15-6 early in the second quarter after Dubuque posted a safety. The Royals then score two touchdowns and a field goal to take a 23-15 lead with 4:44 to play in the third quarter. Levi Duininck ran it in from two yards at 8:41 of the second. After Dubuque went three and out in just 25 seconds, Jake Marsh connected with Bryce Marquardt for a 65-yard touchdown play and a 20-15 lead.
Blake Hottie added a 26-yard field goal for Bethel 10 minutes into the third quarter.
Dubuque drove 86 yards for the tying touchdown, a 38-yard pass from Conor Feckley to Kody Reimer with 5:19 to go in the fourth quarter. Those two also connected for a 21-yard score in the first quarter.
Feckley completed 29 of 65 passes for 337 yards and three touchdowns. Marsh was 17 of 39 for 298 yards but with three interceptions.
McCann rushed for 102 yards on 23 carries for the Royals.
St. John’s 98, St. Scholastica 0
Everybody played and many scored on Saturday for St. John’s in a laughable season-opening victory at Collegeville, Minn.
Quarterback Jackson Erdmann completed 7 of 7 passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for a score, but he was the only Johnnie who posted an offensive number of more than 100. First-year running back Kendrick Hernandez was St. John’s leading rusher with 65 yards on two carries, one of 14 Johnnies to carry the ball.
In all, 13 Johnnies scored touchdowns, with sophomore Will Kleinschmidt the only one with two, those on passes in the second and third quarters.
St. Scholastica of Duluth came into the game with a 26-6 record over the past three seasons, including five consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference titles from 2011 through 2015. But the Saints mustered only 52 yards of offense while St. John’s built a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and 63-0 at the half. The Johnnies piled up 560 yards, 337 on the ground while averaging 7.5 yards a carry.
Gustavus 38, Westminster (Mo.) 0
Junior quarterback Michael Veldman completed 17 of 31 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns to lead Gustavus Adolphus to the home victory at St. Peter, Minn.
Veldman, who was intercepted twice, threw 16 yards to Brice Panning in the second quarter, then capped the scoring with a 6-yard TD pass to Panning in the fourth quarter. He also threw 16 yards to Josh Kirk for a touchdown midway through the third quarter.
Junior wide receiver Jamison Beulke opened the scoring with a 58-yard run with 11 minutes 27 seconds to play in the first quarter. He led the Gusties with 91 of their 246 yards rushing.
Macalester 31, Carleton 20
Macalester quarterback Alec Beatty teamed up with receiver Christian Adams for two long touchdown plays in the third quarter to give Macalester the lead for good at Northfield, Minn.
Carleton quarterback Christian Zaytoun hit receiver Emanual Williams with a 5-yard scoring pass 15 seconds before halftime to put the Knights ahead 13-10. It was Zaytoun’s second TD pass of the game.
But with 10:08 to play in the third quarter, Adams and Beatty hooked up for a 64-yard scoring play. At the 4:41 mark, Adams found Beatty for a 68-yard touchdown play that made it 24-13 Scots.
Zaytoun passed five yards to Williams with 2:23 to play in the fourth quarter. Zaytoun completed 20 of 33 passes for 148 yards but was intercepted five times.
Adams finished 20 of 34 for 341 yards with one interception. Beatty caught five passes for 167 yards.
Concordia 34, Nebraska Wesleyan 14
Michael Herzog passed for 122 yards and two touchdowns on just five completions, and Chad Johnson rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns for Concordia-Moorhead as the Cobbers opened the season at Lincoln, Neb.
Herzog’s 56-yard pass to Austin Maanum at 8:11 of the first quarter opened the scoring. He added a 40-yarder to Kevin Marzolf with 12:10 to play in the third quarter to make the score 34-7.
St. Olaf 56, Grinnell 13
Former Cretin-Derham Hall quarterback Ricardo Johnson III completed 11 of 20 passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns, and Kosey Mitchell rushed for 102 yards and three scores as St. Olaf rolled at Northfield, Minn.
Hamline 51, Crown 0
Hamline quarterback Justice Spriggs threw four touchdown passes and ran for another in the Pipers’ victor at St. Bonifacius, Minn.
Spriggs completed 16 of 22 passes for 222 yards with no interceptions. His 23-yard scoring run with 5:00 to play in the third quarter closed out the scoring.
The Pipers amassed 407 yards of offense to 166 for Crown.
Augsburg 42, Northwestern (Minn.) 7
Junior quarterback Quinn Frisell completed 32 of 49 passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns, and senior Tiras Bolton added 110 yards rushing and a score to lead the Auggies at Minneapolis.
Frisell hit eight of his receivers, with junior Nick Heenie catching nine passes for 110 yards and touchdowns of 25 and 23 yards.
