Concordia-Moorhead 63, Hamline 14

Coming off a last-second loss to Bethel University last week, Concordia-Moorhead College started strong in its 63-14 homecoming defeat of Hamline University Saturday, with two first quarter touchdowns from Cobbers junior running back Ben Wolf and senior fullback Brett Baune.

Concordia (5-1, 3-1) ended the first half up 35-0. The second half proved to be just as effective for the Cobbers, with 38- and 48-yard touchdown passes from Concordia’s sophomore quarterback Griffin Neal.

The Cobbers held the Pipers (1-5, 0-5) to just a 2.7 yard average gain per play and held off any Hamline touchdowns until late in the third and fourth quarters, both from Hamline’s freshman running back Austin Duncan.

The Pipers finished with 156 yards total offense and lost three fumbles to fall for the fifth time in conference play this season.

Hamline is set to host St. Thomas (6-0, 4-0) Saturday, Oct. 20, while Concordia will travel to Minneapolis to face Augsburg College (5-1, 4-1)

St. John’s 51, Carleton 14

St. John’s University snapped a four-game losing streak Saturday, beating Carleton College 51-14 at home with help from freshman quarterback Nick Martin’s three touchdown runs, all under 10 yards.

Martin passed for over 300 yards in Saturday’s matchup, making him the first Johnnie freshman to ever do so.

The Johnnie offense accumulated a total of 553 yards while the Knights were held to only 240. Junior wide receiver Chase Gottschalk led the Knights with 92 yards on five catches, including a 29-yard touchdown reception.

The Johnnies have a bye next weekend while Carleton will take on fellow Northfield-ian St. Olaf College (5-2, 3-2).

Augsburg 45, St. Olaf 37

Augsburg College’s sophomore wide receiver Jerise Washington had four touchdowns and 22 carries for 245 rushing yards, setting a school record in each category and leading the visiting Auggies past the St. Olaf Oles 45-37 Saturday, in Northfield, Minn.

Washington’s final run of the game, a 15-yard touchdown run with 5:53 to play, solidified the Auggies (5-1, 4-1) first win over the Oles (5-2, 3-2) since 2008.

St. Olaf’s senior quarterback Dan Dobson threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns, however had a fatal turnover on the Oles’ last drive in Auggie territory when Ole Michael Thai was not able to recover a fumble. Thai rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns Saturday.

St. Olaf led 17-10 before a 9-yard Washington run tied the game at 17-17 with 58 seconds remaining in the first half. The Oles were never able to regain the lead.

Next weekend, Augsburg will face Concordia-Moorhead College (5-1, 3-1) at home while St. Olaf will travel to crosstown rival Carleton College (1-3, 2-0).

Valley City State University 16, Gustavus Adolphus 0

The Gustavus football team fell 16-0 to Valley City State University (N.D.) on its Saturday homecoming matchup. After three field goals from freshman kicker Thomas Cortez, Valley City State added a late touchdown to hand Gustavus its second straight loss. Gustavus falls to 2-4 overall, while the Vikings improve to 5-2.

Gustavus will face Bethel University Saturday, Oct. 20.
