St. Thomas dining services announced multiple changes coming to on-campus dining next fall, including expanded hours in The View, more variety in the dining menu and most notably, an unlimited meal plan.

The new unlimited plan is available for all students, however all freshman are required to purchase the meal plan. Students are experiencing mixed emotions regarding the plan, especially because of the price increase from other meal plans. Changes like more vegan and vegetarian options will also be accessible in the dining centers.

In local news, 17-year-old Sydney Flack was caught in an encounter with a boulder while driving on Highway 61, Friday night. The teenage driver escaped a serious injury when a boulder rolled down a bluff along the Mississippi River and struck her car.

The boulder ripped apart the vehicle’s undercarriage and deployed an airbag. A nurse who came upon the scene administered first aid. Flack was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

In national news, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has resigned amid President Donald Trump’s growing frustration and bitterness over the number of Central American families crossing the southern border.

Trump announced on Sunday in a tweet that U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, Kevin McAleenan, would be taking over as acting head of the department. The decision to name a top immigration officer to the post reflects Trump’s priority for the sprawling department founded to combat terrorism following the Sept. 11 attacks.
