At least 67 Palestinians were killed early Monday in an Israeli operation to rescue two hostages held by Hamas, local officials said.

The operation took place in the Gaza Strip city of Rafah, which Israel has described as Hamas’ last remaining stronghold in the territory. Rafah is also the town where 1.4 million Palestinians have fled to seek shelter from the Israel-Hamas war, increasing U.S. concerns over the safety of Palestinian civilians if Israel proceeds with an invasion.

Authorities said Sunday that the death toll from a massive landslide that hit the southern Philippines has risen to 54, with 63 people still missing. The landslide hit the village of Masara in the Davao de Oro province last Tuesday night, and was spurred by weeks of torrential rain.

Since the landslide, more than 1,100 families have been moved to evacuation centers, disaster response officials said.
