A gunman stormed a service at his former Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation in Hamburg, killing six people before taking his own life after police arrived, authorities in the German port city said Friday.

Eight people were wounded, including a woman who was 28 weeks pregnant and lost the baby. Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the death toll could rise.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping was awarded a third five-year term as the nation’s president Friday, putting him on track to stay in power for life at a time of severe economic challenges and rising tensions with the U.S. and others.

The endorsement of Xi’s appointment by the Ceremonial National People’s Congress was a foregone conclusion for a leader who has sidelined potential rivals and filled the top ranks of the ruling communist party with his supporters since taking power in 2012.

The University of St. Thomas School of Education announced its collaboration with Maxfield Elementary School on January 27. It will introduce a way to create student-focused environments and prepare aspiring teachers enrolled at St. Thomas.

Though the program doesn’t officially start until next year, St. Thomas students already have a presence at Maxfield this semester.
