For Veterans Day, a group of Democratic lawmakers is reviving an effort to pay the families of Black service members who fought for the nation during World War II but were denied benefits upon returning home.

The new legislative effort would benefit surviving spouses and all living descendants ofBlack World War II veterans.

Leaders of China’s ruling Communist Party set the stage for President Xi Jinping to extend his rule next year.

Central committee members declared Xi’s ideology “the essence of Chinese culture.”

Extending Xi’s rule would break the two-decade old party tradition that would have required the 68-year-old leader to step down next year.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is on “life support.”

In an interview Thursday with the Associated Press, Guterres said the negotiations set to end Friday in Glasgow, Scotland will not likely yield the carbon-cutting pledges he has said are needed.
