A strong earthquake toppled buildings and walls on Indonesia’s densely populated main island today, killing at least 62 and injuring hundreds.

The magnitude 5-point-6 quake shook the region in West Java province in the late afternoon, at a depth of 10 kilometers. It also caused panic in the greater Jakarta area, where high-rises swayed and some people evacuated.

FIFA’s threat of on-field punishment for players pushed World Cup teams to back down today and abandon a plan for their captains to wear armbands seen as critical to host nation Qatar’s human rights record.

Players were told by soccer’s governing body, just hours before the first match, that wearing armbands in support of the “One Love” campaign would result in immediate yellow cards for the wearer.

Ukrainian authorities say they have started evacuating civilians from recently-liberated areas of the southern Kherson region, fearing that Russian damage to the infrastructure and the lack of heat, power, and water is too severe for people to endure the upcoming winter.

The evacuations come as rolling blackouts plague most of the country. Ukraine’s southern regions have been shelled for months by Russian forces. Its residents have been advised to move to safer areas in the central and western parts of the country.
