California will ban people from carrying firearms in most public places, while doubling the taxes on guns and ammunition sold in the state. Two laws Governor Gavin Newsom signed Tuesday, will test the limits of the U.S. Supreme Court’s New standard for interpreting the Second Amendment.

One control group said California will be the only state with a separate tax on guns and ammunition.

A U.S. soldier who fled to North Korea 2 months ago was sent back to American custody. The release of Private Travis King surprised some observers. Tensions continue to run high between North Korea and the U.S.

Even though voters in Minneapolis have O.K.ed a ballot initiative that allows for rent control in the city, the city council has not acted upon it. For nearly 3 years, the council has debated the rent control issue. Mayor Jacob Frey is skeptical of any rent control proposal.

The city of Las Vegas approved a design for a memorial to honor the victims of the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. The design will feature 58 candle-like beams. The memorial will be located at the site of the shooting on the Las Vegas Strip.
