St. Thomas beat Macalester College 5-0 Tuesday at Koch Diamond. The two teams played one of two games, with the second being suspended in the top of the 5th due to inclement weather. The score was 5-2 with the Tommies leading.

The Tommies (9-3, 4-0 MIAC) outscored the Scots (2-2, 2-2 MIAC) 10-2 on the day, and raked eight total hits. The win brings the Tommies’ win streak to six games.

Game 1

St. Thomas red-shirt first-year pitcher Duke Coborn struck out nine in a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and one walk. This was Coborn’s second impressive start after starting against St. John’s University on Mar. 24 where Coborn pitched five innings, allowed two runs on three hits and struck out six Johnnies.

Coborn worked around a first-inning lead-off double by Macalester sophomore infielder Joe Margolis, eventually striking out Macalester sophomore outfielder Kenny Rodriguez to end the inning.

“Honestly I felt better at the St. John’s game.” Coborn said. “But I found a way to get it done.”

Coborn was backed up by an offense led by reigning MIAC Player of the Week Jake Porter, who went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.

“It feels good, I’m seeing it well right now,” said Porter, a red-shirt first-year outfielder. “I’m trying not to do too much and get the job done for the next guy in line.”

The Tommies scored two runs in the second inning and three in the third. The team also stole seven bases in the game. First-year infielder Jonah Hoeg stole two.

Game 2

Macalester College got off to a quick start in game two as Margolis hit a lead-off single, then stole second base. Margolis advanced to third on a balk by St. Thomas red-shirt sophomore Jake Lindsey, and was driven in on a groundout by Macalester senior infielder Leonardo Bucello.

Before the Tommies came to bat in the bottom of the 1st, lightning in the area put the game on delay for 1 hour and 12 minutes.

Once play resumed, the Tommies’ bats were quiet until the second inning, when they took four consecutive walks scoring their first run. First-year utilityman Max Moris capitalized on the opportunity by singling with the bases loaded, scoring two putting the Tommies ahead 3-1.

Porter continued his excellent day at the plate by driving Morris and red-shirt first-year Matt Enck home with a single that put the Tommies up 5-1.

Macalester scored another run in the top of the 4th as junior outfielder Lian Lincoln drove Kenny Rodriguez home with a single.

The game was eventually suspended in the top of the 5th and will be played at a later date. Scores and stats are unofficial until the game can be completed.

The Tommies are scheduled to play on April 10 when they host St. John’s University at Koch Diamond for a two game series beginning at 1 p.m.
