Men’s hockey is 2-0 on the season

Center Alex Altenbernd’s four-point weekend helped the St. Thomas men’s hockey team start off its season with a 2-0 record, defeating both Bethel and Gustavus.

St. Thomas beat Bethel 3-2 Saturday, with forward Connor McBride scoring his second goal of the game 1:18 into overtime.

The Tommies outshot the Royals 46-18; however, they didn’t lead the game until McBride scored his game-winning shot in overtime.

For coach Jeff Boeser, McBride’s goal exemplified the team’s ability to close.

“It was nice to see that we were able to pull it out in overtime because I think we outplayed them,” Boeser said. “They probably a little bit ran out of gas, and their goaltender kept them in the game. They’re a good hockey team; they just got a little tired there.”

On Sunday, the Tommies defeated Gustavus 5-3. Forwards Altenbernd, Nick Nielsen, Chris Cass, Tyler Gubb and Thomas Williams scored for the Tommies.

Boeser said having five different scorers Sunday was a good example of the team’s offensive strength.

“It’s refreshing to see that we’re getting goals scored from different players,” Boeser said. “I like our team; we just have to keep getting better each day.”
