APPLETON, Wis. — A rainy Saturday forced the St. Thomas baseball team’s NCAA Division III World Series game against defending national champion Marietta to be moved to 6 p.m. Sunday.

After getting the Webster-Kean game in earlier Saturday, officials called a weather delay in the fifth inning of the Christopher Newport-Whitworth elimination game around 3:30 p.m. The teams will start their game up again at noon Sunday; Whitworth currently holds a 4-2 lead.

The Christopher Newport-Whitworth game will be followed by the SUNY-Cortland-Wheaton game at 2 p.m. and the St. Thomas-Marietta game at 6 p.m. This schedule would force the remaining games to be pushed back a day, so the championship game would be on Wednesday.

All games are at Fox Cities Stadium, a Class A park and home of the Timber Rattlers, the Milwaukee Brewers’ Midwest League entry.

Sunday’s forecast is mostly cloudy with a small chance of isolated thunderstorms. The temperature could reach 90 degrees.

Tommies coach Chris Olean scheduled an indoor practice for his fourth-ranked team at 8 p.m. Saturday in a facility near Appleton.

Junior pitcher Dylan Thomas, who will be the starter against the top-ranked Pioneers, is torn on rescheduling the big game.

“For me pitching, it actually helps because I get an extra day of rest for my arm, which is always a good thing,” Thomas said. “But it is a huge game for us, so waiting another day is going to suck because all we want to do is play.”

St. Thomas defeated Newport 12-7 in its opening round game on Friday. Marietta defeated Whitworth in the other half of the bracket.
