Seniors display artwork at St. Kate’s

Three St. Thomas seniors had the opportunity to show their artwork at St. Catherine’s Catherine G. Murphy Gallery Saturday.

Maggie Clemensen, Andrea Greamba and Alexandra Wenberg not only created the art that will be on display April 13-May 25, they matted, framed and promoted it in what all three describe as a learning experience.

“We’ve had to do everything from creating business cards and a website and invitations,” Wenberg said. “There’s so much that goes behind making the actual show.”

The show also displayed eight St. Kate’s students’ work. The artists’ families and friends made up most of the audience.

Clemensen said the work process was rewarding.

“We matted and framed all our work ourselves,” Clemensen said. “So that was a really great process to learn.”

Clemensen, a graphic design major, displayed multiple pieces, including four 26-by-26 inch posters, a CD packaging system and a magazine layout.

“Knife crime in London (has) increased by 17 percent in the last five years, so I did a project taking photos in spots where people had been killed by knife crime,” Clemensen said. “I went to all these places throughout London and took photos and then I put it into a magazine layout and wrote captions.”

Greamba displayed four photo montages taken with a film camera. Three of the locations she photographed are in Minneapolis, and one was photographed in Greece.

“I had a different idea for the show originally, but what I ended up with sprouted from those photos I shot (in Greece),” Greamba said. “When I came back, I had this new idea for the photo montages and had to go out and shoot more.”

Wenberg presented a combination of photos and graphic design pieces, including four posters for sale. Each artist has pieces for sale.

Gallery director Kathy Daniels said she is proud of the students who put together the show.

“I hope that they recognize that they are professionals, that they take great pride in the work that they have because this is an extraordinary show,” Daniels said. “I hope that they also feel that and that its transitionary for them; from being a student to being a professional.”
