Southside Deli to open spring 2013

The Binz Refectory on South Campus has revamped last year’s sandwich line with the Southside Deli, which will have make-to-order sandwiches, burgers and salads starting spring semester 2013.

Unlike the sandwich lines in The View or T’s, South Campus’ newest attraction will be a more traditional deli. Binz Location Manager Andy Casale explained the Binz staff will cut the meat in front of you and display menus for a restaurant feel. It will be open during lunch Monday through Friday, as well as one dinner per week.

Freshman Nick Dahlen said this is a step in the right direction for South Campus.

“People like having the option to make their own food how they like it,” Dahlen said. “I might go to try it out.”

Casale said that they are introducing the Southside Deli to offer more variety.

“Rather than to just have two items when you come here,” Casale said. “It’s going to enable us to offer a lot more stuff to people.”

The Southside Deli will be located in the entrée line and the counter space will be extended in that area. The new line will also include more vegetarian, low-carbohydrate and low-calorie items on its menu. The Binz will have thin bread as a low-carb option; veggie sandwiches and black bean with artichoke burgers will be the vegetarian options.

Casale hopes to draw more students to South Campus with the menu changes.

“It’s definitely going to increase the traffic,” Casale said. “I would be surprised if it doesn’t.”

The Southside Deli is a continuation of Mary’s sandwich line from last year, but Casale said it will be a faster process.

Junior Logan Knapp said she was an avid Mary’s Sandwich fan last semester.

“Nothing will ever replace Mary because having that human interaction with her was half the fun of standing in line,” Knapp said. “But I think I would try it out just to see what it was like.”

Over January Term, the Binz will be working on the new sandwich line. The Binz Café on the east side of the building will be open instead during the month.

Casale hopes this new change to South Campus will keep it alive.

“I think it will definitely give people a reason to come down here,” Casale said. “We want to keep the south side (of campus) vital; it kind of gets forgotten about sometimes.”
