The St. Thomas U.S. Air Force ROTC marched under the American flag and placed a vigil in honor of Veterans Day under a rainy sky on Thursday, Nov. 11.

St. Thomas President Julie Sullivan took a moment to observe the 24-hour march and vigil.

“It was a moving tribute that reminds us of our commitment to our veteran students, faculty, staff, and alumni,” Sullivan said in an email to St. Thomas faculty, staff and students.

Originally titled Armistice Day as a way to mark the end of World War I, Veterans Day is celebrated annually on Nov. 11. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name to Veterans Day. The holiday commemorates all veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Sullivan highlighted St. Thomas’ continued support for Veterans in the email.

“We support current military members as well as our student veterans through the Veterans Resource Center. The center offers support, career advice, events, healthcare information, networking opportunities, and a great deal of camaraderie,” Sullivan said.
